Electric, Transmission & Distribution Planner Intern

The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) has an opening for an Electric, Transmission & Distribution (ET&D) Planner Intern in the Work Management Department, located in Lansing, MI.

Job Type: Full-Time Summer Internship

Dates: May 06, 2024 - August 02, 2024

Pay Rate: $21.00 per hour.

The Work Management Office (WMO) supports job planning, scheduling and reporting for internal resource crews at the Board of Water and Light.  This department acts as a hub for the coordination and facilitation of maintenance activities for the BWL.  Working in this department interns will have exposure and the opportunity to interact with multiple departments, industry stakeholders and resource teams, giving wide exposure in regard to work coordination within the industry.

Position Summary:

The Work Management Intern will learn a variety of skills associated with planning and coordinating jobs for Overhead, Underground, and Boulevard Journey workers.  Efforts will be focused on simple and basic jobs. The Intern will support efforts relating to customer driven and maintenance driven activities.  The WM Intern will learn from, and be supervised by, a mentor of the Work Management Department.

Essential Functions:

  • Read and assess basic sketches to then plan out the work detailed out by the engineering design.
  • Coordinate vendors, governmental entities, regulatory entities, internal resources, and contractors.
  • Maintain detailed electronic and paper files for each job coordinated.
  • Follow company processes and guidelines to ensure job being planned is carried through successfully through to the schedule and then to execution.
  • Follow up after each job coordinated and close out any necessary remaining tasks, such as submittal of updated prints.
  • Communicate with customers, various entities, contractors, and a variety of internal stakeholders to ensure success of job being planned.
  • Required to follow BWL Safety Manual and wear personal protective equipment for all field work.
  • Attends training and safety awareness and/or skills improvement as required by the BWL or government agency such as MIOSHA.
  • Expected to comply with all BWL policies and work rules.
  • Predictable and reliable attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job Specifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution with a focus of Engineering with a junior or senior status during the summer of 2024.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.


Physical Requirements / Working Conditions:

Must be able to remain in a stationary position for the majority of the working day.  The person in this position needs to move about inside the office environment. Operates a computer and other office equipment for good portion of the day. Ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration on a computer screen. Must communicate frequently with other departments and employees both verbally and in writing. May need to lift and carry up to 30 pounds and/or position the body to reach items on the floor/ below the knee level or reach above head.  Considerable walking on concrete, uneven terrain and grating. Must climb stairs and work from ladders, platforms, and personal lifts to conduct inspections and make adjustments during emergencies. Good vision required to distinguish colors and numbers when reading gauges, charts, and recorders. Must respond to emergency conditions requiring ability to communicate via phone or radio. Must be able to work various shifts if required. Occasionally exposed to confined/enclosed spaces, dust, coal dust, and inclement weather. 

Majority of work is in a temperature-controlled office environment.  Must perform site visits to various job and work sites.
